Define
Have you ever been reading and come across a word you didn't recognize?
With the ebrary InfoTools "define" tool this experience is a thing of the past!
Use the menu item to instantly link to dictionary
definitions simply by selecting a word.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.
Explain
With the Explain menu item, you can easily access relevant information in online
encyclopedias. ebrary's DCP defaults to Britannica Online, however your library
may have customized this menu item to link you to other online encyclopedia resources.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.
Locate
Simply select the name of a location with your mouse to instantly access maps
using InfoTools. ebrary's default offers three different choices: MapQuest,
National Geographic, and Yahoo. This menu item may be customized by your library
to link to different map resources.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.

You don't have to be multilingual to translate text in ebrary. Just select text,
then translate to and from a number of different languages including French, German,
Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. ebrary defaults to Alta Vista's Bablefish, however
your library may have customized this menu item to link you to other online translation resource.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.
Who
This InfoTools menu item enables you to easily find information about people
including biographies, bibliographies, phone numbers, and email addresses.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.
Search Document
A key feature of ebrary's InfoTools is the ability to
change search terms while you are reading a book. For example if
your original search was for:
carpet AND loom
you may realize
while reading that what you are more interested in specifically
is "lower wages".
This is easy with ebrary using "Search Document."
Search Document enables you to efficiently search within the
current document for words or phrases. When you select text,
then go to Search Document on the InfoTools menu, your search
term will automatically appear in the search field. You may,
however, enter a different search term by overwriting the text
in the search field. InfoTools will take you to the next
occurrence of your search term in the current document.
You may then navigate for each occurrence of your search term
using Next Search Page/Previous Search Page items on the ebrary
Reader Toolbar. See Search section for
details.
Search All Documents
This InfoTools menu items allows you to conduct advanced
searches across all documents in the DCP. You may search by a
number of combinations including by full text, subject, title,
contributor (author) or publisher.
When you select text, then go to Search All Documents on the InfoTools menu, your search term will automatically be entered into the search field, with a text search selected as the default. To enter a different search term, just type a new word or phrase into the search field, and click on the appropriate box for the type of search you'd like to conduct.
When you select OK, your new search results will appear in a new
browser window, with your search terms automatically entered
into ebrary's Advanced Search pane on the left hand side of your
screen. You may then further refine your new search using
ebrary's Advanced Search features, or click a document to start
reading it! See Search section for details.
Search Library
Your library may have customized the InfoTools menu to enable
you to search across its catalog and other subscription databases,
which will appear in the selection list.
Search Web
Search Web allows you to use Internet search engines to expand
your research. Just select a word of interest, then select a
search engine listed in the InfoTools menu. ebrary's default
search engines include All the Web, Alta Vista, Excite, Go,
Google, and Yahoo, however this menu item may be customized by your
library.
Results will appear in a new browser window so you won't lose your place in the book.
Highlight
This InfoTools menu item allows you to highlight text in three
different colors - yellow, pink, or blue - and automatically
store them on your Personal Bookshelf for future reference. You
may highlight by selecting text then choosing Highlight from the
InfoTools menu, or choose the Toggle Highlighting option for a
digital marker. You may also highlight by clicking on the Highlight Text button in the ebrary
Reader Toolbar.
You must be signed in to use the Highlighting feature. When you
highlight text, a link to that section is automatically stored on
your Personal Bookshelf along with all of your other Highlights,
Notes and Bookmarks. To view your highlights in just the current
document, click on the Highlights Tab to the left side of the document.
See Bookshelf help for more information.
Add to Bookshelf
This InfoTools menu item adds a link to a current document on
your Personal Bookshelf. For more information, see Bookshelf help.
Copy Text
ebrary allows you to copy and paste text into Word, email, or any text application
complete with an automatic bibliographical citation. ebrary offers four different
citation formats including MLA (Modern Language Association ), APA (American
Psychological Association), and ACW (Alliance for Computers and Writing).
All ebrary citations include a URL that links back to the exact page from which
the information was obtained. To copy text from a document:
Use your mouse to select the text you want to copy. Select Copy
Text from the InfoTools menu. (or click the Copy button on the ebrary Reader
Toolbar.)
Note: You must use the ebrary Reader to copy text in an ebrary document. Your
browser's "Copy" command/button won't work, nor will Control-C or Command-C.
Once the transaction is completed, the selected text and automatic bibliographic
citation will be copied to your system clipboard. You can then paste the copied
text into a text editor, such as MS Word (Windows/Macintosh), Notepad (Windows
Wordpad (Windows), SimpleText (Macintosh) or TextEdit (Macintosh) or any email program.
To change your citation format, go to Preferences on the InfoTools menu, then select Citation Format.
(See ebrary Reader help for details)
Copy Bookmark
Copy Bookmark allows you to copy and paste a simple URL to an
exact page in an ebrary document as you conduct your research.
These URLs can be pasted into any application such as Word or
email. You can also paste them into your browser and save as a
browser "bookmark" or "favorite."
Note: If you copy the URL that appears in your browser instead
of using Copy Bookmark, it will only link to the first page
containing your original search results. For example, if
the first occurrence of your original search term is on page 15,
then you flip to page 30, you will need to use the Copy Bookmark
feature to copy a URL to page 30. Copying the URL in your
browser will link to page 15.
Print
The Print menu item allows you to print pages complete with an automatic
bibliographical citation. ebrary citations include a URL that links back
to the exact page from which the information was obtained.
Note: you must print by using the Print
button on the ebrary Reader Toolbar or InfoTools menu. Printing directly
from the browser will not print the ebrary content.
You may specify the page or range of pages you wish to print, and choose
to optimize printing for either quality or speed. To specify which printer
should receive the job, click on the Set Up button.
Print Again
If you are having problems printing, select Print Again from the
InfoTools menu. Note that this will only work during a current
browser session. If you are still having problems printing, please
see Printing Troubleshooting help.
Toggle Automenu
Selecting
from the menu
will enable the InfoTools menu to
automatically pop up when you select text. The ebrary default is
Toggle Automenu enabled. This makes access to the InfoTools
features very quick and easy. To turn Toggle Automenu off, just
select
from the menu.
Selecting it again will turn it back on.
Preferences
This InfoTools menu item lets you choose how various functions appear:
-
Highlight Search Terms - You may choose to have your
search terms appear in red text or gray highlights.
You may also turn this feature off.
