Installing the ebrary Reader


Installation - PC IE

To install ebrary Reader for Internet Explorer, running under Windows you need only go view a book. Internet Explorer will detect that you need a copy of the ebrary Reader ActiveX control and, with your permission, download it and activate it. Then you will be viewing your first document.

Installation - PC Netscape

To install ebrary Reader for Netscape, running under windows, you need to download the installer and run it. In some cases you may also need to refresh or restart your browser.
  • Click this link to download the ebrary Reader installer (ebraryReader.exe), remembering where you saved it.
  • Often, depending on your browser settings the installer will launch automatically. If not, find "ebraryReader.exe" and run it.
  • Follow the simple directions and the ebrary Reader will be installed.
  • Continue by searching for and viewing documents.

Installation - PC Firefox

To install ebrary Reader for Firefox, running under Windows, you may need only view a document, and accept our License Agreement. In some cases, Firefox will then handle the rest of the installation for you automatically.

If the ebrary Reader is not installed automatically by Firefox using the above link, you should then follow the following additional steps:
  1. Click on the puzzle piece that says, "Click here to download plugin."
  2. Click on the "Manual Install" button. This will open an ebrary download page in a new window.
  3. Click the "Download ebrary Reader for Windows Now" link. Depending on your security settings, Firefox may display a plugin security warning at the top of the page and refuse to download the plugin. If this happens, you must:
    1. Click the "Edit Options..." button.
    2. Click "Allow" to add ebrary to the list of trusted sites.
    3. Click "OK" to update your options.
    4. Click the "Download ebrary Reader for Windows Now" link again to download the Reader.
  4. Once the plugin downloads, click the "Install Now" button to complete installation.

Installation - PC Mozilla

To install ebrary Reader for Mozilla, running under Windows, you need only view a document, and accept our License Agreement. Mozilla will then handle the rest of the installation for you.

Installation - Mac OS X

Installing the ebrary Reader on a Mac OS X computer will make the Reader available for every browser running on that computer.
To install ebrary Reader for Mac OS X you need to download the installer and run it.
  • Click this link to download the compressed ebrary Reader installer (ebraryReaderInstaller.dmg), remembering where you saved it.
  • Often, depending on your browser settings the installer will uncompress and launch automatically. If not, find ebraryReaderInstaller.dmg, uncompress it with Stuffit and then run ebrary Reader Installer.
  • Follow the simple directions and the ebrary Reader will be installed:
    • Read and accept the license agreement
    • Click Install
    • Close any open web browsers
    • Click Install
    • Click Quit when the installer reports that installation is complete.
  • Launch your browser. Continue by searching for and viewing documents.

Installation - Max OS 9

When installing the ebrary Reader under Mac OS 9 you will need to install once for each browser you wish to use.

To install ebrary Reader for Mac OS 9 you need to download the installer and run it.
  • Click this link to download the compressed ebrary Reader installer (ebraryReaderInstaller.dmg), remembering where you saved it.
  • Most often, depending on your browser settings, the ebrary Reader installer be decompressed and appear on your desktop.
  • If it doesn't launch automatically, you may need to uncompress and launch manually, find ebraryReaderInstaller.dmg, uncompress it with Stuffit and then run ebrary Reader Installer.
  • Follow the simple directions and the ebrary Reader will be installed:
    • Read and accept the license agreement
    • Click Install
    • Close any open web browsers
    • Click Install - you must select each browsers plug-in folder into which you want the ebrary Reader plug-in installed in a separate install cycle.
    • Click Quit only when all browsers plug-in folders have had the ebrary Reader plug-in installed. Then Click Quit when the installer reports that installation is complete.
  • Launch your browser. Continue by searching for and viewing documents.

To use this web site you must have browser cookies enabled and you may need to turn off pop-up blockers for ebrary.com.
Windows
  • Microsoft Windows XP (Home or Professional), 2000 Professional or Windows Vista (IE only).
  • Minimum 64 MB of RAM; 128 MB or more is recommended.
  • Any one of these browsers:
    • Netscape Communicator 7.x
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or newer
    • Firefox 1.0.4 or newer (with the latest ebrary Reader)
    • Mozilla 1.7 or newer (with the latest ebrary Reader)
  • Minimum 5 MB hard drive space available.
  • Access to the internet (via dial-up or broadband connection).
  • Netscape 6, Opera, and other browsers are not supported.

Macintosh
  • Mac OS X, 10.1 or newer
  • Minimum 256 MB of RAM; 512MB or more is recommended.
  • Any one of these browsers:
    • Safari 1.1 or newer
    • Firefox 1.0 or newer (with the latest ebrary Reader)
  • Minimum 5 MB hard drive space available.
  • Access to the internet (via dial-up or broadband connection).
  • Netscape 6, Opera, Mozilla and other browsers are not supported.

AOL
  • The AOL browser is not supported, but once you are connected via AOL you can use one of the supported browsers.

Linux/Unix
  • The Linux/Unix platforms are not supported at this time, but we hope to support them later this year.
