Using the ebrary Reader™
ebrary Reader is a software plug-in for Windows and Macintosh browsers that enables you to navigate, browse, copy, and print documents in the ebrary collection. With the InfoTools menu, a component of the ebrary Reader, you can also quickly access definitions, encyclopedia entries, maps, translations, or biography information for any term in a document.

ebrary Reader toolbar

ebrary Reader toolbar
The ebrary Reader toolbar provides access to the following controls: 
 
a. InfoTools menu (click and hold button until menu appears for selection).
b. Copy the selected text. A bibliographic citation is included automatically.
c. Print a range of pages.
d. Show/hide Contents frame.
e. Bookmarks – click to work with Notes.
f. Highlight text – also used for selecting colors and unhighlighting.
g. Go to the previous page in the document.
h. Go to the next page in the document.
i. Go to a specific page in the document (click and hold button until menu appears for selection).
j. Go to the previous or next (highlighted) search selection.
k. Zoom In (click and hold button until menu appears for selection).

InfoTools menu

The InfoTools menu contains the following tools and features:
 
Menu Function
Define Search for dictionary definitions of selected term(s).*  
* Note
A maximum of 10 words at a time can be selected.
Explain Search for encyclopedia entries of selected term(s).*
Locate Access maps related to selected term(s).*
Translate Translate selected sections to/from French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese.*
Who Find phone information, postal and email addresses, biographies, and bibliographies for the selected term(s).*
Search Document Search the current document for the selected term(s).
Search all Documents Search all documents in the collection for the selected terms(s).
Search Web Search the web (using search engines) for the selected term(s).
Highlight Highlight portions of text for future use. The color options are yellow, pink, and blue, and the highlighted portions are recorded in the Contents/Notes/Highlights section.
Add to Bookshelf Copies the title to your personal bookshelf for future reference.
Copy Text Copy the selected text for pasting into a text editor of your choice. A bibliographic citation is automatically included.
Copy Bookmark Copies the URL for that specific section and can be pasted or saved in bookmarks/favorites for future use.
Print Print the specified pages.
Print Again If you had a printer problem and were unable to print the selected pages, you can try to print again. This will only work during the same browser session.
Toggle Automenu Set the InfoTools menu to pop up (or not) after selecting the desired text.
Preferences Set the default zoom factor, highlight color, table of contents, and menu preferences.
Help Open the Help window.

The grey bar at the bottom of the window when viewing a document contains user information regarding sign in status and account balance. It also contains document information such as page, copy, and print views remaining.

. Bookshelf Bookshelf

The Bookshelf provides users the ability to access a summary of titles they have added to their bookshelf. 

To view or edit your Bookshelf, you must first sign in and click on the View your Bookshelf icon. 

How to add a title to your bookshelf:

  • From a selected document, go to the InfoTools pull-down menu and click on Add to Bookshelf. This will automatically add the title to your Bookshelf. On some co-branded sites, bookmarks or highlights created within a document will save to your Bookshelf with the date that is was added.

How to Delete Titles from your Bookshelf

  1. Under the Account tab, click on the link titled View your Bookshelf. This will display the titles you currently have in your Bookshelf.

  3. Click on the box next to each title you want to delete.

  5. Click on Remove Checked Titles from Bookshelf button. This will remove the document from your bookshelf.

Bookmarks 

Bookmark Bookmarks provide the ability for a user to bookmark a specific page of a specific title. The user can save time looking up referenced material by bookmarking useful pages. To use this feature, users must be signed in. 

How to add a bookmark

  1. From a page in a specific document that you would like bookmarked, click on the bookmark icon from the ebrary Reader toolbar above the document.

  3. From the Notes tab in the Content frame, you will see a list of your bookmarks. These bookmarks will also be viewable in your Bookshelf.

  5. To delete a bookmark, select the bookmark to be deleted, which will take you to that page and press Delete at the bottom of the edit box.

Notes 

Bookmark The Notes section provides the ability for a user to add a note to a specific page of a specific title. These notes will also be saved to your Bookshelf. Users must be signed in prior to creating a note. 

To create a note:

  1. From within a document page that you want to add a note, click on the Bookmark icon found in the ebrary Reader toolbar. Once a bookmark has been created, begin typing in the edit box. This note can be up to 320 characters in length. Once you go to a different page, the previous note will be saved in the Notes tab in the Content frame.

  3. To retrieve this note, click on the note listed in the Notes tab. Not only will the note appear in the edit box, but it will also take you back to the page where the note was created.


To edit a note:

  1. Click on the note to be edited from the Notes tab of the Contents frame.

  2.  
  3. In the edit box, begin editing your note. You may add or delete text or delete the entire note. Click on a new page when complete to save your edited note.


To delete a note:

  1. Click on the note to be deleted from the Notes tab of the Contents frame or you may click on the note from your Bookshelf.

  3. The note will appear in the edit box. Click on the Delete button found below the edit box to delete the note.


Revert button:

The revert button is used to revert back to a previous note you created, but later changed. For example, you type “Use this reference on page 3”, but then edit that note to say, “Use this reference on page 7”. Afterwards, you decide that the original note “Use this reference on page 3” is more appropriate. You can click on the Revert button and it will change the note back to the original. You must be within the same session for this feature to work.

Highlighting 

Highlighting menu Highlighting provides a user the ability to specify text to be highlighted on a book page. The system will only retain this highlight when the user is signed in prior to making the highlight. 

How to Highlight

  1. While viewing a document, locate a portion that you would like to highlight.

  2.  
  3. From the ebrary Reader toolbar, click on the Highlighting icon. From the pull-down menu, select Highlighting and to choose a color (yellow, pink, or blue). 

  4. Tip: Highlighting can also be turned on by simply clicking on the Highlight icon in the ebrary Reader toolbar.
     

  5. With Highlighting selected, your cursor will change to a pen shape. Click and drag over the desired content and it will highlight accordingly.

  7. Each Highlight created will be saved in the Contents frame under the Highlights tab for easy reference. Click on a saved Highlight to return to that page or review in your Bookshelf.

  9. To turn Highlighting off, click the Highlight button again or go back to the pull-down menu and click on Toggle Highlighting. Your cursor will change back to an arrow when it is turned off.

How to Delete a Highlight

  1. Select a specific document that contains saved highlights from your Bookshelf. Click on the pen icon from the ebrary Reader toolbar and from the pull-down menu, click on Unhighlight.

  2.  
  3. Your cursor will change to a pen shape with an X through it. In this mode, click and drag over an area of highlighting that you would like to remove.

  5. Once complete, go back to the pull-down menu and click on Unhighlight again to turn off. To highlight again, select a new pen color from the pull-down menu.

  7. The unhighlighted section will now be removed from the Highlight tab list.
Toggle Automenu

A new feature in the InfoTools pulldown menu is the Toggle Automenu. When activated, the InfoTools menu automatically appears whenever you highlight or select text in a specific document. To deactivate, click on the Toggle Automenu again.
